It wasn’t that late, but it was late. I was out to work up some sweat. It’s safe enough in my street but once I step out, the safety zone ends. There is a dark part of the road to navigate, a big ditch to avoid, ensuring you are not run over by passing traffic (the dark stretch is also narrow) and then there are lights but there are also so many men.
Half of them are security guards, but uniforms or not, they are men. Others are just men out for smoke breaks. Innocuous men, preoccupied men, creepy men, attractive men. It’s an environment that automatically makes you hypervigilant if you are a woman. And like most women, I’m very good at automatically scanning my environment covertly and move accordingly.
But at one point this evening, from the other side of the road and away from all the men, I scanned it openly. And I was reminded of TV shows body guards. You know those guys in black suits with dark glasses (if you are the American president) or dressed more casually if you are Maria Carey whose eyes are always peeled, looking everywhere, looking for danger.
