Ernie Anastos is news. Odd, when you think about it, a TV anchor making news. And for all the wrong reasons. He has an impressive career graph, has done some fine work and won awards. But a few unguarded words and the media’s humming with his verbal faux pas. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can see the video here.
Wikipedia informs us that Mr. Anastos was born on July 12, 1943 (I didn’t find a birth time). Since we’re interested in a communication gaffe, I was really interested in his Mercury. So, what do we see in his natal chart? The only aspects that his Cancer Mercury makes are a conjunction to his Cancer Sun and a trine to his Scorpio Moon. This is what Cafe Astrology says about the conjunction:
“Because the ego and the mind are aligned, people with Sun conjunct Mercury possess much mental energy. (There is) much intelligence and communication ability, and a lot of pride invested in the intellectual capacities. These people may not listen as well as they speak, however! They might be too busy thinking about what to say next.
Their opinions are usually strong and they are independent thinkers. They tend to be proud of their opinions and their thoughts, and might easily get a bruised ego if they are not ‘heard’, if their opinions are pushed aside or ignored, or if their opinions are criticized. Sun conjunct Mercury people are expressive and, in some cases, very animated speakers.”
And this is what it says about Mercury’s trine to the Moon:
“Moon sextile or trine MercuryIt is easy and natural for those born under a harmonious aspect between the Moon and Mercury to make easy conversation, to be inquisitive and interested in the world around them, and to express themselves well.”
So far, so good. We know he’s a good communicator, the guy’s won awards for it. The Cancer planets would make him sensitive and the Scorpio Moon wouldn’t miss a trick. Altogether, he is probably very good at picking up emotional nuances while taking to someone. So what happened that day? His remark insulted his colleague, he used unacceptable language on the news (and apologized for it later on) and probably got into hot water because of it. His unexpected comment was also ambiguous: it left the world bewildered. No one knows what he meant.
What exactly was going on? If I’m right, and correct me if I’m not, the incident occurred on 16-Sept-2009. Transiting Mars was conjuncting his natal Mercury making him irritable, impatient with any restrictions on his verbal expression and giving his words a Martian edge. He swore on TV, it happens. But what has grabbed everyone’s attention was his ambiguous remark. It’s not surprising then to find that transiting Mercury was only two degree away from a conjunction to his natal Neptune at 29 Virgo! In fact Mercury was on 2 Libra, and being retrograde, headed for an exact conjunction to Neptune. This is a part of what Robert Hand says about this aspect, “This transit can indicate unclear and confused thinking. Be particularly careful in your personal communications, because others may misunderstand you even though you think you have been completely clear.”
I’m sure you’ve noticed that Mercury and Neptune are both very close to the Aries Point of 0 Libra. Planets on this point get noticed. And no one is ignoring Mr. Anastos right now: they’re all on YouTube watching him go weird on TV.
Look some more and you’ll see that transiting Saturn is headed for a conjunction with his Neptune and transiting Uranus for an opposition. The former can translate into moodiness, self-doubt, anxiety and a warped perception of reality. And as for the latter, Robert Hand says, “Events will occur that simply do not fit into your scheme, and you will become confused and perhaps act in ways that you consider very unwise.”
The current Saturn-Uranus opposition in Virgo-Pisces is forming a T-Square with Mr. Anastos’s Gemini Saturn: he’s fed up of being politically correct and this attitude is making him unpopular with his employers. I wonder what we’ll hear next.
P.S. Oh, and I just read online that he meant to say, “Keep plucking that chicken.”
