He’s a Democrat, he supported the rights of people with alternative sexual orientation back in the 1950s, admitted to experimenting with bisexuality, gives to charity and called his first wife’s affair before their marriage “the most devastating moment of my life.” He’s had four children from two different wives and now at the age of 84, he’s become engaged to be married to a woman who’s exactly 60 years younger than him.
My trusty Capricorn said, “He’s marrying a beautiful young woman.” He was attitude was what’s the problem? This is a good thing. My trusty Scorpio said, “What’s he going be able to do at 84?” My friends have diverse opinions: there are the outright snickers and there are those who think this is a publicity gimmick, he knows his audience and how to keep them interested. He’s laid himself open to so much derision, so much gossip, as has the young lady who now wears his ring. Someone I know said, “He doesn’t care.” I liked that the best. What is true liberation if not doing what we want and doing it while genuinely being indifferent to the world and its many opinions?
I think it’s tough being a celeb and leading a life where all your moves are closely watched. Where your heartaches are public property, where your mistakes are international news. Where people can laud you for your success one minute and then trample you underneath their feet for a lapse, for being human, for being weak, for failing. I’m as guilty as anyone else of my curiosity about him. But I don’t mean to judge him, he’s a fascinating man and I wanted to look at his chart. So let’s see what I found, okay?
A little about the chart
The documentary on his life is called, “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel.” His chart ruler Mercury is conjunct Uranus, and you don’t need me to tell you that this is an unusual, unconventional man who is well able to wear the epithets in that documentary title. Uranus conjuncts his descendant with an orb of one degree promising something unusual about either his marriages or his choice of marriage partners.
Given Mr. Hefner’s career, it’s fascinating that he has Chiron, the wounded healer, in the eight house of sex. And a very active Chiron it is, too: It conjuncts his Sun, and quincunxes his Saturn and ascendant. Retrograde Saturn in Scorpio is in his third house, forming a T-Square with Neptune and Jupiter. The empty leg of the T-Square falls in the ninth house of publishing.
A little more about his eight house. With Hugh, how can you not focus on the eight house of sex? Mars, the eight house ruler is in Aquarius and the fifth opposing his Leo Neptune in the eleventh. With that is it any wonder that he sold dreams, fantasies of sex bunnies? Lilith is conjunct Neptune by a degree. I wish I knew more about her because I think she’s relevant here in the way he’s taken it upon himself to portray women.
IMDb quotes him as having said, “If there was going to be a sexual revolution, I would be its pamphleteer.” The ruler of the third house of publishing, Pluto, is in the tenth, the house of the career. He’s got Gemini at the cusp of his Midheaven. And we know that Mercury’s conjunct Uranus: reinforcing the theme of publishing and communicating but doing so in a highly unusual manner. Incidentally, he’s been known to attend press conferences dressed in his bed robe and he had an IQ of 152 when he was in high school.
Venus and the Moon signify women in a man’s life and I wanted to look at these. Venus also rules what we value and our aesthetics. He’s got both these feminine planets in Pisces and in the sixth house. The Pisces influence talks of a great sensitivity and in the sixth, he brings it to his work. Steven Forrest says that people with Venus in the sixth see their work mates as their soul mates. In the sixth, Venus also signifies finding love at the work place. The sixth is also one’s employees and his second marriage and current engagement are to women who work for him. In fact he’s had many a romp with his bunnies over the years.
He’s got a sensitive, dreamy Pisces Moon. Its sixth house position brings him emotional fulfillment through work and this is further reinforced by the trine his moon throws to his tenth house Pluto. Remember Pluto rules his third house of print media and communication?
A little about 2010
On January 9, 2010, Hefner’s progressed ascendant changed signs and moved to Sagittarius signifying a new beginning in the way he presents himself and faces the world. At the same time his descendant moved to Gemini, again signifying a new beginning for his intimate relationships. A few days later, he announced that the twins Kristina and Karissa Shannon would be leaving the Playboy mansion. After that he filed for divorce from Kimberley Conrad. They had been separated for 11 years.
On the morning of 25 December, 2010, he Tweeted: “After the movie tonight, Crystal & I exchanged gifts. I gave Crystal a ring. A truly memorable Christmas Eve.” On that day, transiting Juno was two degrees past his ascendant and one degree past the opposition to his natal Uranus in the seventh. Since he’s 84 as I write this, transiting Uranus has come a full circle in his chart. It’s conjunct his natal Uranus and this is what Wikipedia says about it, “The full Uranus return takes place around age 84, and if the person is reasonably well and fit, it can herald a new and lively interest in life. For example, many creative people have completed great works after the age of 84 – Verdi composed his opera Falstaff, and Picasso painted many of his finest paintings late in life.”
A little about Crystal Harris
A brief look at Ms. Harris’ chart before we wrap up things. Alas we don’t have a time of birth, but we do have the date.
An interesting young lady, Ms. Harris. With her Taurus sun opposing Pluto she attracts powerful people into her ambit. And then? Well, her Libra south node is loosely conjunct Pluto, so marriage to powerful men is a part of her karmic past. But that 29 degree Aries North Node is guiding her to find her own identity. Mars, her north node ruler, is in Capricorn conjunct the Moon. These Capricorn placements, especially, the Mars explains why she would be attracted to older, successful men. But she has this energy innately and with time, hopefully, she won’t need to live vicariously through her men. On a last note, her Juno conjuncts Uranus promising an unusual marriage or marriage partner; it’s widely conjunct Saturn showing that there might be a great age difference between her and her spouses. The age difference can go either ways. She might in the future marry someone much younger. Juno also squares Jupiter showing her interest in men who are larger than life. But it is that opposition to Chiron that worries me a little. Pain through marriage, and perhaps eventually healing and wisdom. I wish her well.
UPDATE (3-Jan-2011): I have been told since writing the above by two astrologers, one of them my teachers, that for the kind of sex that Hefner is all about, we should look at his fifth house and not the eight. Eight is sex amongst committed partners. Fifth is recreational sex. In Hefner’s case you can see the Mars and Juipter in the fifth; and Saturn (ruler of fifth) in a T-Sqaure.
