It wasn’t that late, but it was late. I was out to work up some sweat. It’s safe enough in my street but once I step out, the safety zone ends. There is a dark part of the road to navigate, a big ditch to avoid, ensuring you are not run over by passing traffic (the dark stretch is also narrow) and then there are lights but there are also so many men.
Half of them are security guards, but uniforms or not, they are men. Others are just men out for smoke breaks. Innocuous men, preoccupied men, creepy men, attractive men. It’s an environment that automatically makes you hypervigilant if you are a woman. And like most women, I’m very good at automatically scanning my environment covertly and move accordingly.
But at one point this evening, from the other side of the road and away from all the men, I scanned it openly. And I was reminded of TV shows body guards. You know those guys in black suits with dark glasses (if you are the American president) or dressed more casually if you are Maria Carey whose eyes are always peeled, looking everywhere, looking for danger. That, I thought, is the Scorpio Moon, That image of someone scanning the environment for threats. Dark glasses optional.
The moon is in her fall in Scorpio and no wonder. This luminary which plays such a big role in our emotions and bonding with others has a hard time of it in the sign of the suspicious Scorpio. And no kidding. Imagine if someone raises their hand to give you a cookie and bam! your Scorpio moon points a gun at them. The sudden raising of the arm could be a threat. Why is this person offering me a cookie? What do they want? You can see why this lunar position is not easy when it comes to emotional matters. How many people will stick around after staring down the barrel of a Scorpion gun? “Hey, dude, take it easy, man! It’s just a cookie,” they say backing off before they beat it!
Arguing with instinctual reactions is hard. And what are you going to say? It’s safe, it’ll be alright? But it is not safe. Terrible things happen all the time and Scorpio knows this at a deep level. Its operating principle is that the environment is dangerous. Its reaction to this is suspicion and focused probing. Scorpio is the ninja of the zodiac, a product of war, created and trained to kill. A creature of the shadows. You may not see its face. Revelation means death because there are enemies everywhere.
To understand this lunar position we need to understand that survival is the mandate. Life or death. Those are the stakes and there are no higher stakes. Betrayal is death and hence trust doesn’t come easily. Trust no one and no one can betray you. But what a lonely stark place to be. Alone. Suspicious. Always on guard.
Scorpio doesn’t have to walk alone in the dark, its black cloak swirling around, face half hidden. Most living things reach for the light, for the sun, for joy. And Scorpio can have that, too. Perhaps not as easily as the others. It learns, on its quest for happiness and safety that trust should be given when it is earned. That love and sex are powerful transformative energies. Fires that can burn and reduces us to ashes just as they can take us higher to bliss on earth. It engages in these as only a lunar Scorpion can: intensely. You shed your clothes when your bodies mate and you shed your psychological armor when your hearts and souls meld. This cannot be done without trust. Learning about trust and who to trust is a constant on the Scorpio’s karmic agenda.
A mature strong Scorpion, an eagle, has honed its sensors and uses them effectively to guard themselves and those they love. Scorpio’s penchant for probing leads them to become investigators of the psyche: healers, psychiatrist and therapists. Doctors, security guards, your still-waters-run-deep neighbor are all on the same journey. And if they can use their hypervigilance and insights in the right context they bring much to light that needs to be brought out into the light and at the same time find their own place under the sun.
This post is dedicated to my friend Mark, a solar Leo and a lunar Scorpio like me.
